American Big Oil are all in for carbon capture and storage, and the big money industry it is becoming!

Happy Thursday and welcome back to another day of ESC News Blog.

Did anyone happen to see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on August 27, 2023, their article titled, “Carbon capture could be next trillion-dollar industry – Exxon Mobil, Occidental, Chevron and others investing heavily”?  In the article, it speaks about how American Big Oil like Exxon Mobil, Occidental (Oxy), Chevron have all thrown their hats and buckets of money into in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology and development which is still at its early stage of development and an unproven technology.  As their priorities shift into carbon capture, due to the money which Congress placed on the table to reduce emissions with the Inflation Reduction Act and its tax credits of $180 per ton for direct carbon capture and $85 per ton captured directly from a smokestack.   One by one American Big Oil jumped on the bandwagon starting with Oxy, then Exxon Mobil, and the rest.  As more get into the CCS the price should come down.  Currently, International Energy Agency (IEA) places the cost of CCS for ammonia, natural gas processing plants or other similar plants just under $70 per ton which includes moving it to other locations through pipelines and getting it underground for permanent storage.  Unfortunately, other industries like power, steel, and cement plants aren’t as realistic, and the IEA estimates the cost is $400 to $600 per ton for direct carbon capture plant which is a big chunk of change.  It looks like carbon capture is a necessary evil, so we’re going to have to help get the costs down!  This way we all may benefit from it for our future and our grandchildren’s future.  If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Oil companies seek big profits in carbon management (houstonchronicle.com).

Gulf of Mexico’s first offshore wind farm lease auction won’t be going in the record books, but it is a nice modest start to the industry!

Happy Wednesday and welcome back to another day of ESC News Blog.

There’s been a couple articles in The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section the last couple days in response to the first offshore wind action auction for the Gulf of Mexico.  Did anyone happen to see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on August 30, 2023, their article titled, “Offshore auction draws little interest – German energy firm agrees to pay $5.6 million to develop massive wind farm off Lake Charles”?  In the article, it speaks about the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) first Gulf of Mexico offshore wind lease auction which happened yesterday, August 29, 2023, which had an area off Lake Charles (102,480-acres) and two off Galveston Island (102,480-acres and 96,786-acres) which were on the bidding block.  RWE Offshore US Gulf, a German energy company won the bid with $5.6 million far less than an offshore wind lease goes for in the Atlantic, but still a good start for the Gulf Coast.  Unfortunately, the Galveston Island acreage received no bids, but this isn’t surprising considering Texas is a leader in wind energy onshore, electric is cheaper in Texas, higher risk of hurricanes, and less wind speed, than the Northeast Coast.  There wasn’t anything about what’s next for the acreage that wasn’t leased or what area is next on the bidding block for offshore wind energy.  If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article for free on MSN Start, please click the link: First offshore wind auction in Gulf draws limited interest (msn.com).

PHMSA announced proposal for improved safety, construction, and better emergency plans for pressurized gas distribution pipelines.

Happy Tuesday and welcome back to another day of ESC News Blog.

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on August 25, 2023, they reprinted an article from the Associated Press titled, “New rules floated after blasts in Massachusetts”?  In the article, it speaks about U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials SafetyAdministration (PHMSA) proposal to strengthen regulations on gas distributionpipelines which was announced last week.  The interest in updating the regulations is due to the eruptions and fires in 2018 caused by over pressurized gas distribution pipelines in the Merrimack Valley area in Massachusetts, when over a hundred homes were damaged, many people were injured, and someone lost their life.  Recovery from the event took months for some people which meant they didn’t have heat and/or hot water.   PHMSA doesn’t want this to happen again, so they are proposing better construction methods and improved management programs to reduce risks of over pressurized pipelines.  PHSMA would like to make new regulator stations with secondary pressure relief vales and remote gas monitoring systems a requirement in an effort to reduce these incidents.  Lastly, they would like better response plans for gas pipeline emergencies which will require the company to inform local authorities, customers, and the public in the affected area.  PHMSA’s proposal for gas distribution pipeline revised regulations is currently in the public comment period.  If you would like to read more of Associated Press’ article for free on MSN Start, please click the link: New gas pipeline rules floated following 2018 blasts in Massachusetts (msn.com).

In line with this the PHMSA announced earlier this year, they have funds available from the Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure Safety and Modernization grant program.  If you would like to learn more about the grant program, please click the link: Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure Safety and Modernization Grants | PHMSA(dot.gov).

BOEM’s Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 261 which is on September 27, 2023, has a drama brewing!

Happy Monday and welcome back to another week of ESC News Blog.

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on August 26, 2023, they reprinted an article from the Associated Press titled, “Dueling lawsuits filed over oil leases - Energy interests, environmentalists at odds over plan to protect rare whale”?  In the article, it speaks about the Gulf of Mexico oil and gas lease sale, which is scheduled for Wednesday, September 27, 2023, which is part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.  U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Lease Sale 261 has run into a snag because of Rice’s whale which is an endangered species.    The BOEM has reduced the acreage from 73 million acres to 67 million acres due to their agreement to settle a lawsuit with environmentalists about the protected whales, which hasn’t gone over well with the oil and gas industry.  The oil and gas industry and an environmentalist’s group both have filed lawsuits last week in reference to the Gulf of Mexico lease sale in federal court. Neither group is happy about the acreage or the other revisions which includes new speed limits, and new rules for personnel on industry vessels.  It will be interesting to see how this will play out over the next few weeks prior to the Lease Sale 261, or if there will even be a lease sale.  If you would like to read more of the Associated Press’ article, please click the link: Energy interests and environmentalists fight Biden oil lease plan from different sides| AP News.

Newly merged company building a plant to make renewable gasoline and using CCS to catch emissions in California!

Happy Thursday!  We have almost survived the week!

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on August 18, 2023, their article titled, “Verde planning renewable project in California”?  In the article, it is about Verde Clean Fuels a newly formed company who merged two companies (Bluescape Clean Fuels and CENAQ Energy Corp.) earlier this year.   They are going to build a renewable gasoline production plant in Kern County, California which will use waste feedstocks (biomass, municipal solid waste, mixed plastics) and renewable natural gas, and they have teamed up with TerraVault JV HoldCo who will help with carbon capture to catch their emissions.  The plant is expected to make about 21,000 gallons of renewable gasoline a day.  The technology called, ‘syngas-to-gasoline plus’ which was developed by Cenaq Energy will be made at the new plant.  Their timeline is to begin construction in 2025 and be operating in 2027.  If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Houston-based Verde plans renewable gasoline project in California (houstonchronicle.com).

Increased efficiency and reduce your emissions by using freight rail?

Happy Tuesday!

Did anyone see the Tank News International’s Newsletter on August 17, 2023, their article titled, “Rail freight on track for record volumes”?  In the article, it speaks about efficiency and low emissions of railroads.  The Association of American Railroads admits for every gallon of fuel a freight train uses it averages 500 miles on it.  In July, the Environmental Protection Agency endorsed freight rail as a way to help with the climate change because it only makes about 0.5 percent of the U.S. total emissions and 1.7 percent of the transportation caused greenhouse gases (GHG).  One terminal company has stepped up, APM Terminals.   APM Terminals have increased the number of trains it uses in India which gets trucks of the roads and reduces emissions from them.  In the U.S., APM Terminal’s Mobile Alabama location announced an expansion by investing $60 million to expand their rail capabilities to help reduce emissions and their carbon footprint for their customers.  In Europe, their Gothenburg location is following suit of handling more trains.  Freight trains are an effective way to get commodities moving, reduce traffic, and reduce emissions. Using electric to power a drilling rig in North Dakota?

Happy Monday!  Welcome back to another week of ESC News Blog!

Did anyone see the Oil & Gas Journal on August 15, 2023, their article titled, “Hess using all-electric rigs in the Bakken”?  In the article, it speaks about Hess Corp. using four electric drilling rigs powered by Nabors called Canrig PowerTAP highline power transformer module in their Bakken drilling operations instead of diesel.   The electric powered rigs are tied into the electric utility grid and have onsite generators in case there is a power outage.  This Hess pilot program which began in 2022 was a success with a second power source because it improved dependability of the rig, has helped increase net production from 163,000 boe/d compared to 152,000 boe/d in the first quarter of 2023, reduced traffic, odor, and noise.  Hess is planning to change over to these electric powered rigs in all its Bakken drilling operations near power lines over the next five years because it is expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 50% and reduce energy costs by 70%.   This is a good plan for cutting GHG emissions which can help the planet by cleaning up emissions where we can and make the air quality better for everyone.  If you would like to read more of the Oil & Gas Journal’s article, please click the link: Hess using all-electric rigs in the Bakken | Oil & Gas Journal (ogj.com).

Enhanced geothermal is it the next fracking boom?

Happy Thursday!

We were going through our email and realized we never blogged about a breakthrough pilot utility scale program for geothermal from a company in Houston.  Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on or about July 19, 2023, their article titled, “Houston geothermal firm banks on fracking tech to produce renewable energy”?  In the article, it speaks about Fervo Energy’s successful thirty-day well test in northern Nevada which used a process called enhanced geothermal.  Fervo Energy’s, “Project Red” used what appeared to be a normal looking oil rig, but instead of producing oil they produced geothermal heat from deep in the Earth by using methods made for hydraulic fracking.  Their test produced 3.5 megawatts which broke the record for most power geothermal has ever produced.   Enhanced geothermal is different than the usual way geothermal power is done because hot water isn’t pumped from deep underground to run turbines which generate electric it uses what’s more in line with what hydraulic fracking does and breaks up the rock to produce power.  The Department of Energy (DOE) is investing in enhanced geothermal in the tune of almost $200 million with the bulk of the money going into converting oil and gas practices to geothermal.  The DOE’s goal is to bring the price of geothermal down to $45 per megawatt, so it is able to compete with other renewable energy.  No one believed in fracking until George Mitchell showed it could be done thriftily and be profitable and look at the difference it has made for Texas now. We wish them the best of luck in perfecting enhanced geothermal energy.   If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Fracking helped Fervo advance this renewable energy source (houstonchronicle.com).

DOE awards money to two direct air capture facilities in Texas and Louisiana!

Happy Tuesday!

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on August 11, 2023, their article titled, “Texas, La. sites get carbon capture nod- Energy Department puts up to $1.2 billion behind Occidental and Battelle projects”?  In the article, it speaks about Occidental Petroleum’s (Oxy) project south of Corpus Christi and Battelle’s project in southwest Louisiana which will be direct carbon capture facilities which will remove and permanently store up to one million metric tons of CO2 every year.  The two projects have been chosen to be awarded $1.2 billion of federal money from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.  Two more direct capture facilities will be awarded the rest of the money in the future, but the DOE won’t start looking until next year.  We wish the two projects much success in helping clean our air!   If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Texas,Louisiana selected by DOE as first direct air capture hubs(houstonchronicle.com).

Will solar farms be getting ag exemptions?

Welcome back to another week on ESC News Blog!  Happy Monday!

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on August 10, 2023, they reprinted an article from the Virginian-Pilot titled, “Grazing sheep grace solar farms - 1,000 consume vegetation, reducing the need for lawn mowers, other landscaping machinery in Virginia”?  In the article, it speaks about Dominion Energy’s use of sheep to maintain the land at their solar farms in Virginia which helps the land and the environment.  What they are doing is called solar grazing and it is environmentally friendly which reduces the use of landscaping machinery, but it isn’t anything new according to the American Solar Grazing Association.  Currently, Dominion Energy’s use of sheep has only reduced the use of landscaping equipment by fifty percent, but they hope in the near future for it to be seventy-five percent.  Dominion Energy’s solar farms employs about 1,000 sheep over its six locations.  Sussex Solar Farm has about 100 sheep which help maintain the 80,000 solar panels on its 216 acres site.  The sheep and solar farm help each other by the panels help shade and protect the sheep from inclement weather and sun while the sheep eat the vegetation, keep the soil healthy, and help with soil erosion, so it’s a win-win situation.  The number of sheep are determined by the size of the site, and research is still ongoing on the benefits of this relationship, but it currently it is a way to help farmers make some income.  We have heard of goats and other livestock helping clear land for parks and other sites, but this is a first for areas which produce energy.  It sounds like the wheels of capitalism working together for a common goal of a cleaner and brighter future.  If you would like to read more of article it can be viewed on PressReader, please click the link: PressReader.com - Digital Newspaper & Magazine Subscriptions

Solar farm at sea not science fiction anymore!

Happy Wednesday!

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Texas Inc. Section on July 30, 2023, they reprinted an article from Bloomberg titled, “Solar farms at sea are next breakthrough”?  In the article, it speaks about projects which are using solar panels at sea in spite of the harsh conditions.  There are a several experiments going on or are being planned around the globe including China, the Netherlands, Japan and Malaysia.   State Power Investment Corp., China and OceanSun AS, Norway have one of the most notable tests for the offshore solar projects in the Yellow Sea; its project has been going on since the end of 2022.   The information gathered in this test will help expand the understanding of solar panels at sea and the effects of saltwater and other harsh conditions, but it will also help answer the question is this another location for energy to be harnessed in large scale.  The U.S. in the beginning of 2023 put into operations their largest floating solar project in New Jersey on a freshwater reservoir.   China has other floating solar projects like the one on a manmade lake in Huainan, Anhui Province, China and it generates enough power to light 100,000 homes.   Solar panels which may handle four-meters waves will be coming into commercial use in the near future and ones which may handle up to 10-meter waves are expected in about the three years.  Different ideas for the best way to float the panel and its shape are now in the process of being tested.  Solar farms at sea are not just a science fiction fantasy; they are an incoming reality in parts of the world and our quest for energy!  If you would like to read more of the Bloomberg article which is available on yahoo!finance, please click the link: Solar Farms Out at Sea Are Clean Energy’s Next Breakthrough (yahoo.com).

Happy Thursday!

Did anyone hear that the Port of Brownsville announced Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Corporation received their Notice to Proceed for Phase 1 on the Brazos Island Harbor (BIH) Channel Improvement Project in late July?  Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Corporation will begin the channels deepening along the 17-mile Brownsville ship channel which will be dredged from 42 to 52 feet later this year.  The 2 phase BIH project will be paid for through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) Public-Private Partnership (P3) which includes the Port of Brownsville, NextDecade and other stakeholders.  NextDecade will be paying for Phase 1 of the BHI project which includes dredging from the mouth of the ship channel to their western boundary of the leased site.  In addition, NextDecade will be establishing two ship berths and a turning basin for its Rio Grande LNG facility.  Phase 2 improvements include dredging from the turning basin to NextDecade’s Rio Grande LNG facility.  Phase 2 will be partially paid for by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act Appropriations Law which $68 million has been assigned for the project.   This is great news for the Port of Brownsville and its future with hosting large vessels.    If you would like to read more about the BHI Channel Improvement Project at the Port of Brownsville, please click the link: https://www.portofbrownsville.com/bih-project-gets-a-boost-great-lakes-receives-notice-to-proceed-for-phase-1-of-channel-deepening-project/.

The first U.S. nuclear reactor built from the ground up in over 30+ years goes online!

Happy Wednesday!

We bet you were starting to wonder about us and thinking we were only going to post EIA report releases!  We went on vacation, and well our reading is a bit behind!  We are back in the saddle, and we are looking for interesting things to speak about in our Blog.

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, reprint of the article from Associated Press titled, “Nuclear power plant goes online in Georgia”?  In the article, it speaks about how the first nuclear reactor in United States built from the ground up in over thirty years is up and running in Georgia.  Georgia Power Co., Vogtle Unit 3 is suppling reliable power to the electrical grid and has a maximum output of 1,100 megawatts which powers up to five-hundred-thousand homes and businesses.  There is a fourth reactor due for completion by March 2024.  The nuclear reactors are over seventeen billion dollars over budget and their completion is seven years overdue.  The original project was supposed to cost 31 billion dollars and Unit 3’s expected completion was 2016, but typical delays and schedule overruns impeded the project.  Nonetheless this project is helping with our path for a carbon-free world!  If you would like to read more of the reprinted article from the Associated Press, please click the link: The first US nuclear reactor built from scratch in decades enters commercial operation in Georgia | AP News
