Enhanced geothermal is it the next fracking boom?

Happy Thursday!

We were going through our email and realized we never blogged about a breakthrough pilot utility scale program for geothermal from a company in Houston.  Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on or about July 19, 2023, their article titled, “Houston geothermal firm banks on fracking tech to produce renewable energy”?  In the article, it speaks about Fervo Energy’s successful thirty-day well test in northern Nevada which used a process called enhanced geothermal.  Fervo Energy’s, “Project Red” used what appeared to be a normal looking oil rig, but instead of producing oil they produced geothermal heat from deep in the Earth by using methods made for hydraulic fracking.  Their test produced 3.5 megawatts which broke the record for most power geothermal has ever produced.   Enhanced geothermal is different than the usual way geothermal power is done because hot water isn’t pumped from deep underground to run turbines which generate electric it uses what’s more in line with what hydraulic fracking does and breaks up the rock to produce power.  The Department of Energy (DOE) is investing in enhanced geothermal in the tune of almost $200 million with the bulk of the money going into converting oil and gas practices to geothermal.  The DOE’s goal is to bring the price of geothermal down to $45 per megawatt, so it is able to compete with other renewable energy.  No one believed in fracking until George Mitchell showed it could be done thriftily and be profitable and look at the difference it has made for Texas now. We wish them the best of luck in perfecting enhanced geothermal energy.   If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Fracking helped Fervo advance this renewable energy source (houstonchronicle.com).
