Happy Wednesday!
Did anyone see The Houston
Chronicle’s Texas Inc. Section on July 30, 2023, they
reprinted an article from Bloomberg titled, “Solar farms at sea are next
breakthrough”? In the article, it speaks
about projects which are using solar panels at sea in spite of the harsh
conditions. There are a several experiments
going on or are being planned around the globe including China, the
Netherlands, Japan and Malaysia. State
Power Investment Corp., China and OceanSun AS, Norway have one of the most notable tests for the offshore solar
projects in the Yellow Sea; its project has been going on since the end of
2022. The information gathered in this
test will help expand the understanding of solar panels at sea and the effects
of saltwater and other harsh conditions, but it will also help answer the question
is this another location for energy to be harnessed in large scale. The U.S. in the beginning of 2023 put into
operations their largest floating solar project in New Jersey on a freshwater reservoir. China has other floating solar projects like
the one on a manmade lake in Huainan, Anhui Province, China and it generates
enough power to light 100,000 homes.
Solar panels which may handle four-meters waves will be coming into commercial
use in the near future and ones which may handle up to 10-meter waves are
expected in about the three years.
Different ideas for the best way to float the panel and its shape are
now in the process of being tested. Solar
farms at sea are not just a science fiction fantasy; they are an incoming reality
in parts of the world and our quest for energy! If you would like to read more of the
