The first U.S. nuclear reactor built from the ground up in over 30+ years goes online!

Happy Wednesday!

We bet you were starting to wonder about us and thinking we were only going to post EIA report releases!  We went on vacation, and well our reading is a bit behind!  We are back in the saddle, and we are looking for interesting things to speak about in our Blog.

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, reprint of the article from Associated Press titled, “Nuclear power plant goes online in Georgia”?  In the article, it speaks about how the first nuclear reactor in United States built from the ground up in over thirty years is up and running in Georgia.  Georgia Power Co., Vogtle Unit 3 is suppling reliable power to the electrical grid and has a maximum output of 1,100 megawatts which powers up to five-hundred-thousand homes and businesses.  There is a fourth reactor due for completion by March 2024.  The nuclear reactors are over seventeen billion dollars over budget and their completion is seven years overdue.  The original project was supposed to cost 31 billion dollars and Unit 3’s expected completion was 2016, but typical delays and schedule overruns impeded the project.  Nonetheless this project is helping with our path for a carbon-free world!  If you would like to read more of the reprinted article from the Associated Press, please click the link: The first US nuclear reactor built from scratch in decades enters commercial operation in Georgia | AP News
