All eyes are on Richmond, Texas to see if large scale carbon capture and sequestering facility will work to aid us in our stride to become carbon neutral!

Happy Thursday!

We blogged about the second chance a carbon capture plant in Richmond, Texas in our blog back in February and March, when we started the blog.  The carbon capture facility has completed its upgrades and repairs, and it looks like it’s going to get its chance to shine.

Did anyone happen to read The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on September 26, 2023, their article titled, “Carbon capture project restarts after three years”?  In the article, it goes on to speak about Petra Nova’s carbon capture facility which is one of the largest commercial utility scale plants of its kind, but more importantly it is the only one of its kind which is attached to a power plant.  The power plant is connected to Unit 8 of the WA Parish coal-fired power plant in Richmond, Texas and back in the Spring of 2022 Unit 8 had a fire.  Now Unit 8 and the carbon capture facility are both up and running as of September 5, 2023.   This large-scale facility is getting a chance to really show what it can do after a three-year hiatus, and all eyes will be watching to see if it can do exactly what it is supposed to do. The recovered CO2 will come from the flue gas of Unit 8 which through various processes will be separated and then 90% of the CO2 will be recovered by a solvent.  The recovered CO2 will then be sent southwest down a pipeline 81 miles to West Ranch oil field where it then will be used in a process called enhanced oil recovery where it will be inserted and then be stored underground.   The Petra Nova plant’s owner JX Nippon says it may now be able to isolate 1.4 million tons of carbon dioxide a year and they are hoping it will help us get to carbon neutral.   If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Petra Nova carbon capture facility restarts after three-year shut down(houstonchronicle.com).

BOEM’s Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 261 is delayed; how will saga continue…!

Happy Wednesday!

Well, we knew that the saga would continue, but we didn’t think it would be so soon! Let’s give you a little recap!  Back at the end of August the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) was being sued by the Oil and Gas Industry for reducing the acreage by about 6 million acres and making new terms and restrictions for the lease sale because of the endangered species which lives in the northern Gulf of Mexico and the environmentalists sued to stop the sale.  The Oil and Gas Industry’s case had its day in court on September 21, 2023, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana and the Honorable Judge, James David Cain, Jr., ruled the BOEM must return to the original lease sale terms and acreage announced back in March because the changes came at the last minute and the proper steps were not taken.  By the end of the week the BOEM filed an emergency request to allow the sale to proceed, but leave the new restrictions, and the environmentalist also filed an appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit in New Orleans.  Now you are all caught up with what has happened as of the end of last week!

Did anyone see the Daily Update from Oil & Gas Journal on September 26, 2023, they wrote an article titled, “Gulf of Mexico oil and gas lease sale delayed”?  In the article, it speaks about the Gulf of Mexico Oil and Gas Lease Sale 261 and the emergency request the BOEM and environmentalists filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit in New Orleans on Friday.  The oil and gas lease sale was scheduled for this Wednesday, September 27, 2023, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit sent down a ruling on Monday, September 25, 2023, to delay the sale to November 8, 2023, to allow for the 3-judge panel to consider the emergency request by the BOEM and interested parties.  It will be interesting to see how this saga will play out in the next few weeks.  If you would like to read more of the Oil & Gas Journal’s article, please click the link: Gulf of Mexico oil and gas lease sale delayed | Oil & Gas Journal (ogj.com).

BOEM’s Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 261 which is this week; saga continues……...will the endangered whales be the real loser!

Happy Monday and welcome back to another week of ESC News Blog.

Back at the end of August (August 28th) we blogged about the Gulf of Mexico’s Lease Sale 261 and how the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) was being sued by the environmentalists and the Oil and Gas Industry for changing the acreage and making new terms for the lease sale.  The Oil and Gas Industry’s case had its day in court last Thursday in Louisiana.

Did anyone see results of the case in The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on September 23, 2023, they reprinted an article from the Associated Press titled, “Judge rejects oil lease plan to save whales”?  In the article, it speaks about the Gulf of Mexico Oil and Gas Lease Sale 261, which is scheduled for this Wednesday, September 27, 2023, and how the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana struck down the reduced acreage and revisions the BOEM placed on the Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale.  U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Lease Sale 261 had run into a snag because of Rice’sWhale which is an endangered species.    The BOEM had reduced the acreage from 73 million acres to 67 million acres due to their agreement to settle a lawsuit with environmentalists about the protected whales.  The BOEM made some other revisions which included new speed limits, and new rules for personnel on industry vessels which were meant to protect the whales.   The Honorable Judge, James David Cain, Jr., ruled the BOEM must return to the original lease sale terms and acreage announced back in March.  The BOEM and the environmentalists have already filed their appeal with the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans on Friday.  It will be interesting to see how this will play out over the next few days with the lease sale scheduled for later this week.  If you would like to read more of Associated Press’ article, please click the link: Judge blocks government plan to scale back Gulf oil lease sale to protect whalespecies | AP News.

Amogy is opening a location in Houston to help build engines to decarbonize the shipping industry!

Happy Thursday!  Can you believe the week is almost over?

Did anyone happen to read The Houston Chronicle on September 20, 2023, their article titled, “Ammonia-to-power startup to hire 200 – North Houston facility to launch in 2024, making equipment to decarbonize shipping”?  In the article, it goes on to speak about the Brooklyn based company, Amogy who is repurposing a facility in North Houston to make engines which use ammonia as the fuel to aid in decarbonizing the shipping industry.   Amogy’s engine changes the ammonia to hydrogen which powers their fuel cell technology to make electric which runs the engine of the ship.  The engine is similar to the size of the existing diesel engines in a ship, so it can be swapped out.  Amogy chose Houston because of its proximity to its supply chain and its skilled workforce.  They plan to hire 200 people from engineers to administrators before the end of 2024 and hiring is underway.   Amogy Houston is expected to be up and running in early 2024.  If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Maritime hydrogen engine startup launches Houston manufacturing plant(houstonchronicle.com).

TxDOT making progress in constructing wildlife crossings!

Happy Wednesday!

We take safety seriously especially, when it comes to traffic because no one likes waiting in rush hour traffic because the unthinkable has happened! A fatality accident!  Did anyone happen to read The Houston Chronicle on September 18, 2023, their article titled, “TxDOT pushing for more crossings to protect wildlife”?  In the article, it goes on to speak about the Texas Department of Transportation is applying for more federal grants to fund more animal crossings and bridges.  The TxDOT has been constructing a couple crossing for animals under highways in hopes of helping preserve a species like the ocelot as well as other animals which live in the same areas in deep South Texas.  Ocelots, a type of small leopard, use to roam Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, but as society expands, we have taken more of the areas many animals live.  The grant money TxDOT received was from the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program which is from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act which has $350 million over the next five years available for projects like animal crossings and others.  The TxDOT has kept an eye on the animal crossings and found they work to protect animals including ocelots, mountain lions, bobcats, racoons as well as other species, people, and their vehicles.  The animal crossings are part of the Beyond the Road campaign where archeologists, historians, environmental scientists, and engineers work together to preserve natural resources and habitats before building roads and bridges, so nature wins, and future generations get to enjoy these creatures too!  Texas highways and roads have many accidents which involve wildlife and these wildlife crossings have helped reduce the numbers of deaths, injuries, and property damage due to having a wildlife-vehicle collision.  Texas has thirty-two of these wildlife crossings across the state, and twenty-one in South Texas, and they are working to help all Texans!  As the work continues to add thirteen more of these wildlife crossings as more funds and grants come in.  This program is another way our population growth and nature may work together for us both to thrive and live side by side.  If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: TxDOT working to build more wildlife crossings, bridges (houstonchronicle.com).

Shale Industry pushing the limits when it comes to drilling techniques!

Happy Two-for-Tuesday!

Did anyone happen to see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on September 15, 2023, they reprinted an article from Bloomberg titled, “U.S. oil drillers push the limits sideways – 1 in 5 new wells to rely on horizontal drilling techniques”?  In the article, it goes on to speak about U.S. shale oil producers are testing the boundaries of drilling techniques by not just drilling down several miles but across sometimes as much as three or more miles (think up to fifty football fields).  In the Permian Basin, they are expecting drillers in 2024 to drill one out of five new wells going down three or more miles, then they will be going across several miles in the subterranean horizontal holes, but this technique even two years ago was almost unheard of.   As the shale industry ages one will see more creative drilling which includes drilling zigzags and U-turns which means more money invested to produce and more risk, so costs will increase.  An example of the cost for the new risky wells is a two-mile lateral well can cost upward to $6.5 million and a three-mile one may cost about $9 million.  With the oil getting harder to reach it means the wells will be costlier, so the drilling will be done more and more by the larger companies.  What will all this risk mean for the future of shale industry only the future and wells will tell!  If you would like to read more of reprinted Bloomberg’s article for free on yahoo!finance, please click the link: US Oil Drillers Push the Limits Sideways (yahoo.com).

Cemvita lands a large contract to sell their sustainable aviation fuel to United Airlines!

Happy Monday!  Welcome back to another week of ESC’s News Blog!

Did anyone happen to see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on September 14, 2023, their article titled, “United to buy fuel from biotech firm – Airline to get 50 million gallons from Cemvita of Houston, which uses microbes to make gas from waste”?  In the article, it goes on to speak about the Houston startup, Cemvita, who is using microbes to make sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).  Cemvita is a company which uses microbes to make SAF by using carbon dioxide and a mixed sugar and other types of waste.  The microbe mix might may be able to use direct air carbon capture which would possibly make the product carbon negative.  Cemvita’s SAF is comparable to soybean oil which is used to make biofuel.   The Houston company has a small facility now, but has a larger facility is in the works, so it may fill large orders.   United Airlines made use of The Inflation Reduction Act which helps them buy SAF at a more cost-efficient price, so they bought it.  United signed a twenty-year agreement to buy up to fifty-million gallons of SAF a year from Cemvita which will to help them reduce their carbon footprint and their goal of having their airplanes only use sustainable fuels.  Already this year the SAF industry has made more than 15.8 million gallons which is more than what was produced all of last year.  If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article for free on MSN Start, please click the link: United agrees to buy sustainable aviation fuel from Houston biotech startup (msn.com).

Honeywell is pairing up with the National Renewable Energy Lab to develop hydrogen fuel storage for Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles.

Well, we have almost made it through the week, so happy Thursday!

Did anyone happen to see the newsletter from ILTA News this morning, September 14, 2023, they had an article from the Associated Press titled, “Honeywell Partners with National Renewable Energy Lab on Hydrogen Fuel Storage”?  In the article, it goes on to speak about Honeywell teaming up with National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for the next year to work on a project to make a prototype and help with the marketing and advancement of a cartridge-based hydrogen fuel storage to be used in Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).  Honeywell is bringing their high-tech experience to help aid with evaluation of the hydrogen fuel cartridge, help with accessing the raw materials and finished product market, and help with the demonstration model and piloting program to be eligible for the “Fuel Additives for Solid Hydrogen (Flash) Carriers in Electric Aviation” project.  The current technology uses either piloted helicopters or long-range drones which mostly use combustion engines which make noise and release emissions into to air, but they can go for long distances and carry heavy loads.   The use of electric aerial vehicles falls short on distance and weight of the load, so Honeywell and NREL will be trying to change that with an UAV power source which is quiet, have an extended life, and uses some type of hydrogen storage to go the distance and carry the loads with little or no emissions.   The goal of the FLASH project is to use a solid material which will breakdown quickly and efficiently to a hydrogen gas which will enable the fuel cell to power the UAV as an end result.  If they can make the hydrogen fuel storage project a success, this will help the future of the hydrogen market and our strive for net-zero.  If you would like to read the full article from the Associated Press’s article, please click the link: HONEYWELLPARTNERS WITH NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LAB ON HYDROGEN FUEL STORAGE | AP News.

USACE has four options for the Dakota Access Pipeline’s Missouri River crossing and now awaits public comments on EIS!

Happy Hump Day aka Wednesday!

Did anyone happen to see the newsletter from the Oil & Gas Journal on September 11, 2023, they had an article titled, “Corps of Engineers lists options for fate of Dakota Access Pipeline”?  In the article, it goes on to speak about what the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) came up with when they were court ordered to reconsider easement approval for the Dakota Access Pipeline’s Missouri River crossing.  The Dakota Access Pipeline is a 30- inch crude oil pipeline which is 1,172-miles long which starts in North Dakota and ends at a hub in Patoka, Illinois where it is connects with other oil pipelines.   USACE came up with four options which the final decision won’t be decided until after the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).  The draft of the EIS was released September 8, 2023, and it is very comprehensive report which goes into great detail about the options, and it is in its public comment phase and the phase closes November 13, 2023.  The options USACE offered comes down to allow the easement or withdraw the easement.  The first two options withdraw the easement which will to close down the crude oil pipeline and either they restore the area to its natural beauty; or allow the pipe to stay as is and let nature take over.  The other two options grant the easement, but then three scenarios evolve increase the amount of oil allowed to 1.1 million barrels a day, allow the pipeline crossing with some additional requirements to reduce the impact, if there is an accidental release like sampling and leak detection technology, or majorly change the route of the pipeline and require additional permits and this would cause at least a two-year delay.  USACE has a serious decision to make in regard to this pipeline, so stay tuned to see what the final outcome is!  If you would like to read the full article from the Oil & Gas Journal article, please click the link: Corps of Engineers lists options for fate of Dakota Access Pipeline | Oil & Gas Journal (ogj.com).

Solar is all the rage at the African Climate Summit this year!

Happy Two-for-Tuesday!

Did anyone happen to see The Houston Chronicle’s Texas Inc. Section on September 10, 2023, they reprinted an article from the Associated Press titled, “Off-grid power ramps up below Sahara as Africa Climate Summit promotes solar”?  In the article, it goes on to speak about the African Climate Summit which is happening in Nairobi this week, and they are all about renewable solar energy and its reliability, lower costs, and it being a clean energy.  Africa and especially the Sub-Sahara have an abundance of sun year-round this is why the mini grids work well there.  The electric grid in many African nations is very unreliable or some communities aren’t even connected, but mini grids are increasing speed being installed in many African countries.   The African people and businesses are buying into the energy source because it is reliable, clean, and has a lower cost after the initial investment which are re-cooped after four-years.  In recent times, its mini grids have grown from 500 to between 2000 to 3000 now.  Governments are not necessarily funding the growth many solar companies are offering installment plans for up to 18-months, and businesses, homeowners and communities are buying into the installment plans in hopes of either getting reliable power or reducing costs.  Solar energy has allowed a freedom from the grid that people and businesses have never had before, and it only has signs of growing.  If you would like to read the Associated Press’ article, please click the link: As Africa Climate Summit promotes solar, off-grid power ramps up below the Sahara | AP News

Texas is ranking third in residential solar installations, but still a trendsetter in generating power!

Happy Monday!  Welcome back to another week of ESC’s News Blog!

Did anyone happen to see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on September 8, 2023, their article titled, “Solar panel installations slow within Texas – State still a leader nationwide as U.S. industry is projected to add record amount of power”?  In the article, it goes on to speak about how residential solar panel installation growth has slowed due to rising high interest rates and retail electricity prices slowing.  In 2022, Texas growth in residential solar installations grew 57%, but as of mid-2023 it has only grown 5%.  Texas is still a leader in solar power and currently ranks third in installation growth this year.  Nonetheless, with the tax credits from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act rolling out this should improve the market for residential panels, and U.S. made solar panels which many of the facilities are still in the works.  Solar energy is expected to grow to about 32 gigawatts this year across all sectors which includes residential, commercial, community, and utility-scale-solar projects.  The clean energy that solar has made produces 45% of all the newly created power that has been added to the U.S. electrical grid, and it now makes 153 gigawatts and is expected to grow to 375 gigawatts in the next five-years (2028).   If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Texas lags as U.S. solar installations projected to set record (houstonchronicle.com).

Five of the North Sea’s oil platforms are now using the largest floating wind farm!

Happy Thursday!  It’s hard to believe the week is almost over, so hang in there!

Did anyone happen to see The Houston Chronicle’s Texas Inc. Section on September 3, 2023, they reprinted an article from Blomberg titled, “World’s largest floating wind farm is powering North Sea oil platforms”?  In the article, it speaks how the new clean technology of floating wind farms are making electricity for five oil platforms for Equinor ASA.  The largest floating wind farm is called Hywind Tampen floating wind farm, and it is generating 88 megawatts for electricity for the platforms about 90-miles off the coast of Norway in the Gullfaks and Snorre fields.  The wind turbines blades stretch about 620 feet above the North Sea, and they weigh about 22,000 metric-tons, and they are operated from an onshore control center in Bergen, Norway.  These are just the beginning of the future of floating wind turbines which are expected to grow to 23.3 gigawatts by 2035 from the 200 megawatts now in 2023.  As for fixed offshore turbines they are expected to grow to 509 gigawatts in the future.  The floating wind farms have opened the door for companies to generate electricity in places normally not able to use clean energy.   If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s reprinted Bloomberg article on PressReader.com, please click the link: PressReader.com - Digital Newspaper & Magazine Subscriptions.

Kent Britton was announced as the new full-time CEO for the Port of Corpus Christi!

Happy Tuesday!

We would like to say,” Welcome aboard to the new CEO of the Port of Corpus Christi, Mr. Kent Britton!”

Did anyone hear that the Port of Corpus Christi announced today that they have decided to make their interim CEO a permanent full-time CEO to take effect immediately?  The Port of Corpus Christi Commissioners in a special session voted and named Kent Britton their permanent CEO, after an extensive search across the U.S.  Mr. Britton has been an important part of the team for the last six years as Chief Financial Officer.  The past team helped bring the Corpus Christi Channel Improvement Project (CIP) which is dredging the thirty-six-mile channel from -47-feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) to -54-feet MLLW and widening it to 530-feet, so the new larger vessels may come to port.  They will be adding and constructing 400-feet of barge shelves, so two-way traffic will be on the channel.   Mr. Britton has thirty years in the accounting and finance world in industry and non-profits and was a welcome addition to the Port in 2019.   Mr. Britton’s leadership style will be a good fit for the Port of Corpus Christi, and he has a reputation for building bridges to get things done.    If you would like to read more of the Port of Corpus Christi’s announcement, please click the link: Port of Corpus Christi Announces New Chief Executive Officer, Following Competitive Nationwide Search - Port of Corpus Christi (portofcc.com).

Is an e-natural gas facility in the works for the Gulf Coast? Maybe!

Happy Monday and welcome back to another week of ESC News Blog.

Did anyone happen to see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on September 1, 2023, their article titled, “Sempra eyes e-gas facility project on the Gulf Coast”?  In the article, it speaks about the announcement Sempra made on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, in which its Sempra Infrastructure is teaming up with a group of Japanese companies including Mitsubishi Corp., and three Japanese gas utilities: Tokyo Gas Co., Osaka Gas Co., and Toho Gas Co. to decide, if they should build an e-natural gas or synthetic natural gas facility along the Gulf Coast.  The facility would mix renewable hydrogen and carbon captured CO2 to make 130 million tons of e-natural gas.  With the growing number of proposed or approved direct air capture plants popping up along the Gulf Coast this is something thing to do with the captured CO2 besides leaving it underground, and it is a type of carbon recycling.  The e-natural gas facility would be able to access the existing gas pipelines and processing facilities webbed throughout the Gulf Coast and have easy access to the existing hydrogen facilities and the possible hydrogen hubs which are in the works in this region of the Gulf.   The e-natural gas would then be transported to Sempra’s Cameron LNG facility to be made into liquified e-natural gas and exported to Japan.    If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Sempra joins Japanese consortium eyeing Gulf Coast e-gas project(houstonchronicle.com)
