Happy Monday! Welcome back to another week of ESC’s News Blog!
Did anyone happen
to see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on September 14, 2023, their
article titled, “United to buy fuel from biotech firm – Airline to get 50
million gallons from Cemvita of Houston, which uses microbes to make gas from
waste”? In the article, it goes on to
speak about the Houston startup, Cemvita,
who is using microbes to make sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Cemvita is a company which uses microbes to
make SAF by using carbon dioxide and a mixed sugar and other types of waste. The microbe mix might may be able to use direct
air carbon capture which would possibly make the product carbon negative. Cemvita’s SAF is comparable to soybean oil
which is used to make biofuel. The Houston company has a small facility now,
but has a larger facility is in the works, so it may fill large orders. United Airlines made use of The Inflation
Reduction Act which helps them buy SAF at a more cost-efficient price, so they
bought it. United signed a twenty-year agreement
to buy up to fifty-million gallons of SAF a year from Cemvita which will to
help them reduce their carbon footprint and their goal of having their airplanes
only use sustainable fuels. Already this
year the SAF industry has made more than 15.8 million gallons which is more
than what was produced all of last year.
