Five of the North Sea’s oil platforms are now using the largest floating wind farm!

Happy Thursday!  It’s hard to believe the week is almost over, so hang in there!

Did anyone happen to see The Houston Chronicle’s Texas Inc. Section on September 3, 2023, they reprinted an article from Blomberg titled, “World’s largest floating wind farm is powering North Sea oil platforms”?  In the article, it speaks how the new clean technology of floating wind farms are making electricity for five oil platforms for Equinor ASA.  The largest floating wind farm is called Hywind Tampen floating wind farm, and it is generating 88 megawatts for electricity for the platforms about 90-miles off the coast of Norway in the Gullfaks and Snorre fields.  The wind turbines blades stretch about 620 feet above the North Sea, and they weigh about 22,000 metric-tons, and they are operated from an onshore control center in Bergen, Norway.  These are just the beginning of the future of floating wind turbines which are expected to grow to 23.3 gigawatts by 2035 from the 200 megawatts now in 2023.  As for fixed offshore turbines they are expected to grow to 509 gigawatts in the future.  The floating wind farms have opened the door for companies to generate electricity in places normally not able to use clean energy.   If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s reprinted Bloomberg article on PressReader.com, please click the link: PressReader.com - Digital Newspaper & Magazine Subscriptions.
