Happy Tuesday and New Year’s Eve!
You know we love a
follow-up. This is the second clean energy
project we have heard about in the San Miguel Power Plant area, back in mid-August
Sage Geosystems announced they were building Texas’ first geothermal energy
storage facility in the region; please check out our Blog in mid-August 2024
for details.
Did anyone
happen to see the article on MSN on December 30, 2024, they had an article from
Chron titled, “Texas coal power plant awarded $1.4B to become solar, battery
facility”? The article speaks in regard
to how the San Miguel Power Plant has been given a grant of $1.4 billion from
the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to change from a coal plant over to a
solar and battery facility. The money
is part of the $4.37 billion the USDA had to invest in either grants or loans as a way of
helping reduce emissions in rural America and their cooperatives. San Miguel Power Plant is under the control
of San Miguel Electric Cooperative Inc., and they will be receiving federal funds
to help keep the lights on in South Texas and reduce emissions by 1.8 million tons
a year. The clean energy project is
expecting to produce 400 megawatts (MW) from solar panels, and it will have the
capabilities to store 200 MW in a battery energy storage system onsite. The project is expected to be in full
operations by 2027. The San Miguel Power
Plant is expected to be mothball in 2037, so now they now know what’s next for this
important community member. We wish them
luck in their transition! If you would
