The Panama Canal Authority has announced they are anticipating returning to normal transits in September, if rains continue.

Happy Wednesday!

Well, you know we love an update and a follow-up!  We speak about the Panama Canal pretty often in the last few months, nonetheless we heard some more good news!  Please check out our blog for other interesting information and future plans for this important waterway.

Did anyone happen to read gCaptain Daily Newsletter on July 31, 2024, they republished an article from Reuter’s titled, “Panama Canal Looks to Boost Transits in September as Rains Come Early”?  The article speaks in regard to the Panama Canal Authority’s announcement; they are anticipating the rains will keep coming, and they will be increasing to 36 daily passages a day in early September.  This good news comes, after they recently announced they will increase the number of passages to 35 on August 5.  In 2023, the lack of rain caused this important waterway to reduce the number of passages through its locks which caused the shipping industry to back up as they waited their turn.   The Panama Canal Authority believes with them resuming to normal number of passages their income will increase by approximately 18% or $5.6 billion for the 2024-2025 fiscal year which starts in October.  The canal possibly resuming normal operations in the near future is good news to the shipping industry!

On another note, the article spoke about the possible projects to be developed in Columbia and Mexico to connect the Pacific and Atlantic oceans to help with the increased shipping traffic.  Mexico’s administration has spoken of developing a freight rail line in the southern part of the country connecting the oceans.  While Columbia has previously spoken about developing a passageway through the country connecting the oceans.   Panama Canal Authority believes these two projects would help them keep the shipping industry moving.

The article spoke about the Panama Canal Authority looking for more water assets.   They briefly spoke about the new reservoir they are planning to construct.   The new reservoir’s timeline is six years, and it is costing more than $1 billion, nonetheless it will help this waterway by giving it a buffer against future droughts.  (See our Blog on July 15, 2024, for details.)  If you would like to read more of gCaptain’s article, please click the link: Panama Canal Looks to Boost Transits in September as Rains Come Early (gcaptain.com).

Wind Challenger has been installed on MOL’s Green Winds bulk carrier.

Happy Tuesday!

We love a follow-up!  We wrote about MOL’s first wind assisted bulk carrier, Shofu Maru, back in early July 2023, when we told you about the U.N. International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) weeklong discussion, and their goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.  Some of the ideas which were being suggested to help reduce greenhouse gases were installing various kinds of sails on vessels, reducing the speed of vessels, using kites, using artificial intelligence to chart better routes, and switching vessel’s engines to use hydrogen or ammonia were just a few discussed by the IMO.  Please check out our Blog back in July of 2023 for details.

Did anyone see Tank News International’s Weekly Newsletter on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, they had an article titled, “MOL announces delivery of bulk carrier Green Winds”?  In the article, it speaks about Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, LTD posted their new Ultramax bulk carrier has Wind Challenger, a retractable rigid sail system installed on their 63,896 DWT vessel named Green Winds.  They are expecting nine vessels to have Wind Challenger installed, the first two vessels are Green Winds and Shofu Maru.  MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding collaborated on the Wind Challenger design; it is a retractable rigid sail which uses wind energy.  Wind Challenger has shown to reduce fuel usage and GHG emissions approximately 7 to 16 percent with ship size, trade routes travelled, and marine weather and wind influencing reduction outcomes.

MOL Group who will be operating Green Winds has created its net-zero goals for its future by incorporating current energy efficiency technology and fuel reduction tactics to attain their goals by 2050.  MOL Group plans on using Wind Challenger on its fleet with 25 ships by 2030 and 80 ships by 2035.  If you would like to read more of the article from Tank News International, please click the link: MOL announces delivery of bulk carrier Green Winds | Tank News International.

Learnings from the GHPB’s Commerce Club Luncheon from Thursday, July 25, 2024.

Happy Thursday!  Sorry we have been away so long; we will be posting back on the regular schedule starting today.   We’ll post the EIA information tomorrow as usual!

We went to the rescheduled Greater Houston Port Bureau (GHPB) Commerce Club Luncheon at the Houston Marriot South at Hobby Airport today.

The speaker was Ambassador Juan B. Sosa, he is the President of the U.S. -Panama Business Council and he is the Consul General of Panama in Houston since 2014.  In 1994, Ambassador Sosa with other important trail blazers started the U.S.- Panama Business Council which is a business organization with international members who spearheaded the U.S.-Panama Free Trade Agreement.  This important business organization has been involved in programs and trade missions which have helped strengthen Panama’s ties to Houston and Texas as well as the Houston Ship Channel.  Houston has benefitted by they have helped us to become the #1 global city in GDP to exports.

Ambassador Sosa spoke on the history of Panama and the establishment of the Panama Canal.  Ambassador Sosa told the story of origins of the canal including the special mail ship from the East Coast which brought mail to the West Coast with a stop in New Orleans in 1848.  The discovery of gold on the West Coast brought the 49ers which many travelers traveled on this mail ship.  The travelers would then travel across by Panama by mule and get on a steamer ship bound for the West Coast of the U.S.   The first train line in 1856 connected Houston to New Orleans which then travelers boarded ships to Panama bound for the West Coast.   In the 1880s, France tried to develop a canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific, nonetheless they failed and went bankrupt. President Teddy Rosevelt and his administration saw the importance of building a canal and signed a treaty in 1903 with Panama and its newly established government. This was the beginning of the original locks which were 110 feet wide by 1000 feet long and completed and started operation around 1914.  The canal made a difference in both World Wars.  Ambassador Sosa spoke about the 2nd set of locks which were approved in 2006 and completed in 2016.  This important waterway has made a difference in today’s global economy.   He briefly spoke about the upcoming changes to the canal and the lessons learned with the last El Nino season and the drought it brought.

Thank you, Ambassador Sosa!  You are an interesting and informative speaker, and we wish you much success with your latest trade mission with the U.S.-Panama Business Council!

As you see the speakers at the GHPB’s Commerce Club Luncheons bring an informative talk to all that attend.  The next Commerce Club Luncheon is September 12, 2024, at 11 a.m.  The speakers will be having a Brownwater/Bluewater discussion, and the speakers will be Nathan Hough/Campbell Transportation, Captain Clint Winegar/Houston Pilots and Alberto Hernandez II/Vessel Traffic Service.  We hope to see you there!  Please check out the website, if you would like to learn more.  September 2024 Commerce Club Luncheon - Greater Houston Port Bureau (txgulf.org).

The Panama Canal Authority has announced additional slots will be opening soon for its users, and they are planning on constructing a new reservoir.

Happy Monday!  Welcome back to another week or ESC News Blog.

Well, you know we love an update!  We speak about the Panama Canal pretty often in the last few months, so in regard to our pattern we thought this story is in line with our blog.  Back in February we spoke in regard to the Panama Canal Authority announcing they were investing in their capital investment budget.  Please check out our blog on February 22, 2024, for further details.

Did anyone happen to read gCaptain Daily Newsletter on July 10, 2024, their article titled, “Panama Canal Expects New Water Reservoir for Ship Crossings in 6 Years”?  The article speaks in regard to the Panama Canal Authority’s announcement they are investing and planning on building a new reservoir called, “Indio River reservoir” which is expected to cost approximately $1.2 billion and is anticipated to be in service in around six years.  In addition, another $400 million will be used to improve the adjacent areas and for their residents.  The Indio River reservoir project will be used to help the canal with maintaining the 36 vessel passages, and the improvement is in light of what happened when a drought impacts the area.   This is good news to those who use this important waterway!

On another note, the Panama Canal Authority also announced the current rainy weather has improved the water table in the reservoirs, and they will be increasing the number of transits through the waterway for both set of locks after August 6th, 2024.  They will be increasing the number of vessels to 35 passing through this important waterway is good news for the canal, and its journey back toward normalcy.  If you would like to read more of gCaptain’s article, please click the link: Panama Canal Expects New Water Reservoir for Ship Crossings in 6 Years (gcaptain.com).

DOE has requested proposals for them to purchase 4.5 million barrels to refill Bayou Choctaw for last quarter 2024 delivery.

Happy Thursday!

Recovery is slow here in Houston.  We are starting to think they aren’t fixing the traffic lights around us and the gully wash of a rain we had this afternoon didn’t help!  We hope your area of town is faring better!

At this point, you know how we enjoy writing follow-ups for our Blog!  We wrote about the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) having purchased or have had returned to them approximately 42.6 million barrels of oil, and they have lined up purchasing agreements for another approximately 9 million barrels to be delivered in September, October and November to Big Hill SPR in Texas.

Did anyone happen to read the DOE’s CESER Updates Newsletter for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve on July 10, 2024, their update included, “U.S. Department of Energy Announces New Solicitations for 4.5 Million Barrels Continues Biden-Harris Administration’s Commitment to Replenish at a Good Deal for American Taxpayers, Maintain the SPR’s Operational Readiness, and Protect the Nation’s Energy Security”?  In the DOE’s updates, the Office of Petroleum Reserves has announced another round of solicitations for purchase for up to 4.5 million barrels of sour crude for their reserves at Bayou Choctaw in Louisiana to be delivered the last quarter of 2024.  Their decision was based on the price of oil being below their threshold of $79, and Bayou Choctaw’s scheduled maintenance being behind them the SPR decided to post another solicitation to refill this important American

Texas GLO has made a call for RFP for state-owned waters leases for the CCS industry.

Happy Wednesday!  Hope everyone is making due with the current lack of power and cable and for those lucky enough to have regained their utilities; please enjoy it for us!

Be careful driving around!  This morning approximately 1300 traffic lights were still out; please treat it as a four-way stop and be courteous!

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on July 5, 2024, reprint of the article from Inside Climate News titled, “Texas seeks proposals for offshore carbon capture – State trying to mitigate climate change and greenhouse gases”?  The article is in regard to Texas General Land Office (GLO) opening a request for proposals (RFP) for carbon capture in our state-owned waters in June with proposals due in October. GLO has made this request three times since 2021.  The area up for development is approximately million acres which are located in the state open waters in Lavaca Bay to the southern part of Laguna Madre, then offshore of South Padre Island, Matagorda Island, Freeport, and the Bolivar Peninsula.  The carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) has been around for a while, but now the federal government has made bigger incentives which has made the industry more tantalizing for the oil and gas industry.  As of this article the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has yet to permit a “Class VI” well in Texas; currently Texas has 13 permit applications waiting for review.  Texas Railroad Commission has applied to the EPA for approval to permit its own Class VI wells like the authority Louisiana, Wyoming and North Dakota have been given. The monies from the offshore leases will fund the Permanent School Fund.  If you would like to read more of the reprinted article from The Houston Chronicle, please click the link: Texas opens more coastal waters for carbon storage wells (chron.com)

The Gulf Coast’s oil and gas industry had only slight effects from Hurricane Beryl.

Happy Tuesday! Now that the Gulf Coast area has begun cleaning up from Hurricane Beryl and crews are trying to get the power back on, we thought you would like some positive news.

Did anyone happen to read the Oil & Gas Journal’s Daily Update Newsletter on July 8, 2024, their article titled, “Hurricane Beryl has minimal impact on US Gulf oil, gas operations”?  The article was on the US Gulf Coast oil and gas industry and what they did to prepare for Hurricane Beryl and some updates on how they weathered the storm!  Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery prepared for the storm and had minimal power trouble which caused some flaring.  Phillips 66 prepared the areas operations for the hurricane, so had no real impacts as of this story. ExxonMobil prepared for the storm and made changes to its operations to ensure no real productions disruptions. Chevron stated production in the area was at typical levels, nonetheless they made adjustments to personnel on their offshore facilities.  As for other offshore companies like Shell and ExxonMobil they made adjustments to the personnel and prepared for the incoming hurricane.  Port Houston was closed Monday and today, but is expected to resume operations Wednesday, July 10, 2024, see their website for details.  It is good news the Gulf Coast oil and gas industry fended so well through Hurricane Beryl with good preparation, evacuating unnecessary personnel, and making adjustments to their operations should help prices and production capacity stay stable or have only slight effects.  If you would like to read more of Oil & Gas Journal’s article, please click the link: Hurricane Beryl has minimal impact on US Gulf oil, gas operations | Oil & Gas Journal (ogj.com).

Midwest Carbon Express Carbon Capture and Sequestration Pipeline jumps a hurdle!

Happy Wednesday!

We love a follow-up, yet alone good news.  We blogged on Summit Carbon Solutions back in March 2023 and the hang-ups they had progressing their CO2 pipeline.  They were in the news earlier in June due to a favorable ruling from North Dakota’s Supreme Court. Now they are in the news again for something positive which progresses the project, even more!

Did anyone happen to read the Oil & Gas Journal’s Daily Update Newsletter on June 28, 2024, their article titled, “Summit gets Iowa approval of 18-milion tpy CO2 pipeline”?  The article is about Summit Carbon Solutions’ application for their 18-million tonne/year Midwest Carbon Express Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) Pipeline project and its favorable final decision by the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) last week.   After a lengthy hearing process with hundreds of witnesses and exhibits the IUB gave a favorable final decision with stipulations including they must get North and South Dakota’s approval of the route and sites in their respective states before starting construction in Iowa as well as a few others before they issue the final permit.  Summit Carbon Solutions is in process of filing in South Dakota for their permit which is expected to be filed in July.  Summit Carbon Solutions has expanded their pipeline with the addition of Poet, LLC and Valero Renewable Fuels Co., LLC, and filed an additional permit with the IUB with a public hearing possibly toward the end of the year.   If you would like to check out the article from the Oil and Gas Journal, please click the link: Summit gets Iowa approval of 18- million tpy CO2 pipeline | Oil & Gas Journal (ogj.com).

Summit Carbon Solutions’ Midwest Carbon Express CCS Pipeline project is expected to cross five states and cover approximately 2,000 miles.  The pipeline will end in North Dakota where the carbon dioxide will be stored underground in geologic formations.  The Midwest Carbon Express Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) Pipeline proposed route.

SPR’s Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve has announced the buyers for their gasoline just in time for Independence Day!

Happy Tuesday!

At this point, you know how we enjoy writing follow-ups to our Blog!  We spoke on the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve (NGSR) having a sale on approximately 42 million gallons of gasoline back in May with delivery by June 30th.

Did anyone happen to read the DOE’s CESAR Updates Newsletter on July 2, 2024, their update included an announcement for, “U.S. Department of Energy Award Contracts for the Sale of Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve As Americans Hit The Road for Summer Driving Season”?  In the DOE’s updates, they speak about the five companies who were the winners of the liquidation sale of gasoline from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve’s facilities.  There were 19 proposals from five companies were filed for the May RFP, and all the companies had bids accepted.  Contracts were signed by the following companies and their respective acquisitions: BP (500,000 barrels), George W. Warren, LLC (100,000 barrels), Vitol (200,000 barrels), Freepoint Commodities (200,000 barrels), and Irving Oil (98,824 barrels).  The mean price of the gasoline sold was $2.34 per gallon which will reduce retail prices mostly in the Northeastern states of the U.S.  The respective companies collected their gasoline from one of the two locations of the NGSR by the end of June, and the gas hit the market to reduce costs for the upcoming 4th of July holiday which is one of the biggest road trip days.  If you would like more information on the DOE’s CESAR Update on the NGSR, please click the link:   DOE Awards Contracts for the Sale of Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve as AmericansHit the Road for Summer Driving Season | Department of Energy.

TAE’s fusion technology may be the clean energy OLCV is looking for!

Happy Monday and welcome back to another week of ESC News Blog!

Did anyone happen to read the Oil & Gas Journal’s Energy Transition Update Newsletter on June 20, 2024, their article titled, “Oxy’s low carbon ventures subsidiary signs MOU to explore fusion energy for DAC”?  The article was on the signing of the memorandum of the understanding (MOU) between Oxy Low Carbon Ventures (OLCV) and TAE Technologies for the possible commercial application of TAE’s Power Solutions to OLVC’s Direct Air Capture (DAC) facilities. TAE’s Power Solutions is fusion technology which is emission-free, uninterrupted and ready when needed power.  Fusion happens in a reactor when nuclei collide and produce energy as a by-product, and this makes the steam which then causes a turbine to spin to make electricity for a generator to use as electricity or heat.   OLCV will have to use different clean energies depending on the location of their DAC.  OLCV and TAE Technologies collaboration will help OLCV’s mission of helping clean up carbon dioxide from our air, nonetheless they need power to work their equipment and TAE’s fusion technology will help them be clean there!  If you would like to read more of Oil & Gas Journal’s article, please click the link: Oxy’s low carbon ventures subsidiary signs MOU to explore fusion energy for DAC | Oil & Gas Journal (ogj.com).
