Happy Tuesday!
We love a follow-up! We wrote about MOL’s first wind
assisted bulk carrier, Shofu Maru, back in early July 2023, when we told
you about the U.N.
International Maritime Organization’s
(IMO) weeklong discussion, and their goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Some of the ideas which were being suggested to
help reduce greenhouse gases were installing various kinds of sails on vessels,
reducing the speed of vessels, using kites, using artificial intelligence to
chart better routes, and switching vessel’s engines to use hydrogen or ammonia
were just a few discussed by the IMO.
Please check out our Blog back in July of 2023 for details.
Did anyone see Tank News
International’s Weekly Newsletter on Wednesday, July 17,
2024, they had an article titled, “MOL announces delivery of bulk carrier
Green Winds”? In the article, it
speaks about Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, LTD posted their new Ultramax bulk carrier has Wind
Challenger, a retractable rigid sail system installed on their 63,896 DWT
vessel named Green Winds. They are
expecting nine vessels to have Wind Challenger installed, the first two vessels
are Green Winds and Shofu Maru. MOL
and Oshima Shipbuilding collaborated on the Wind Challenger design; it is a
retractable rigid sail which uses wind energy. Wind Challenger has shown to reduce fuel usage
and GHG emissions approximately 7 to 16 percent with ship size, trade routes
travelled, and marine weather and wind influencing reduction outcomes.
MOL Group who will be operating
Green Winds has created its net-zero goals for its future by incorporating
current energy efficiency technology and fuel reduction tactics to attain their
goals by 2050. MOL Group plans on using
Wind Challenger on its fleet with 25 ships by 2030 and 80 ships by 2035. If you would like to read more of the article
