Ever since we believe all
energies are needed for modern society, we thought we should have an update on
tidal energy!
Did anyone
happen to read Market Moves Energy Newsletter on January 12, 2024, they republished
an article from Electronic Design titled, “Harnessing the power of tidal energy”? The article was about tidal energy having a
place at the table with renewable energies, even though it’s in a very early stage
of development. Tidal power has the promise
to be a more consistent form of energy unlike solar and wind which many variables
effect if it produces like no wind and clouds.
Tidal energy has a consistent source because of the gravitational pull
between the Sun, Earth and Moon, and we know when it is going to happen due to
the high and low tides. The one
disadvantage is oceans aren’t everywhere, and you need a specific kind of
waterway for example an estuary or a narrow channel. In recent years, there has been strides in
technology and design for tidal energy. Tidal
energy is expecting to be more competitive, then it once was especially with
the push for clean energy and the 2050 deadline to be Net Zero, and it may be a
way to help a country be energy independent.
Tidal energy
is starting to come into the light because of the Western World starting to
realize its potential to be a renewable energy. In the U.S., tidal energy has not been done
commercially, nonetheless things are changing. Tidal energy along with wave and
ocean current energy in the future should be able to produce enough energy to
power a large number of business and homes according to the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE). The DOE
in 2022 invested money in this kind of technology to further its advances. In France, in the mid-60s the city of La
Rance made a large tidal barrage which is still making energy to power their homes
and businesses still today! The government
of the United Kingdom pledged money for their tidal power initiative in 2021 in
hopes it will help them become less reliable on non-renewables and other countries
and meet their Net Zero goals. The
future for tidal energy is hopeful in our strive for more power to fuel modern society! If you would like to read more of Electronic
