and we did say, if we heard anything else on this Alaskan wonderland! U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) had the National Petroleum Reserve- Alaska (NPR-A) oil and gas sale back in March, see out
Blog for details. Well, it looks like the
U.S. BLM is looking to change some policies in regard to this Alaskan wilderness
and its future development. Let’s dig
in.
Did anyone
happen to read the Oil & Gas Journal’s OGJ Daily Update Newsletter on
Sept 4, 2026, their article titled, “US BLM proposes to end project-by-project
environmental reviews to speed NPR-A development”? In the article, it speaks on how U.S.
Department of Interior (DOI) and its Office of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced
earlier this month they are looking to speed up permitting in the NPR-A in
Alaska at the request of an Alaskan trade group. Alaska Oil and Gas Association made the
request to speed up permitting because of the redundancy of the environmental review
process which currently takes at least a couple years under the National Environmental
Policy (NEPA). The U.S. BLM is suggesting
key changes for the NPR-A including a single framework environmental review instead
of evaluating it from scratch as required in NEPA; set timelines with a final authorization
with or without conditions within 60 days; and the owner/operator needs to
start building within four years of authorizations. They have stipulations on whose oil and gas lease
these suggest these changes would apply to including the new extraction site within
25 miles of existing hydrocarbon set-ups and “No-Surface Occupancy” (NSO) zones. The U.S. BLM currently is preparing the
Environmental Impact Statement using almost three decades of data or 120 previous
reviews to develop their single framework review. These changes they say will reduce costs and speed
up development of oil and gas leases. The
U.S. BLM’s drafted rule is in the Federal Register and there is a 60-day public
comment period which ends in early November; 2026-18261.pdf. We will let you know, if we hear anything
