Happy Thursday!
You know will
like engineering innovations. Back in
2024 we blogged on WindWings from BAR Technologies, and how their rigid
sails helped reduce emissions and fuel savings. Well, this innovative sail is in the news
again.
Did anyone
happen to read the gCaptain Daily Newsletter September 16, 2026, their
article titled, “WindWings Eyed for Next-Generation HD Hyundai LNG Carrier”? In the article, it spoke on how a group have
come together to study and design the what’s next for LNG carriers. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been authorized
by BAR Technologies, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korean Register, and
the Liberian Registry, and the group will be working together to try and
determine if rigid sails will be able to fulfill all standards as well as reduce
greenhouse gases and fuel consumption. HD
Hyundai Heavy Industries’ 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carrier model with space near
the bow will be having WindWinds propulsion system fitted on the vessel to test,
if the system will help meet reductions the shipping industry is looking for to
help the environment and fuel cost. BAR
Technologies has WindWings installed currently on many bulkers and tankers
with over 20 separate sails with an estimated reduction of 100 tonnes of CO2 a
day. The Korean Register and Liberian
International Ship & Corporate Registry will evaluate the model against all
governing standards. The collaboration
of these companies is to help the LNG shipping industry find its way to reduce
emissions before limits are implemented and carbon taxes arise. We wish
the companies luck in their collaboration in finding the what’s next for LNG
carriers. If you would like to read more
