U.S. BOEM is making changes for scheduling of Offshore Renewable Energy Lease Sales.

We try to stay on top of the happenings in the energy industry and this News Release from Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) cast a gloomy outlook on the budding offshore wind industry with their removal of at least temporarily of assigned Wind Energy Areas WEA on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) as well as they will be reviewing current government leasing and permitting practices according to a release last week.   The BOEM has more changes coming. 

Did anyone happen to receive the News Release from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) on August 4, 2025, their news release titled, “Note to Stakeholders - BOEM Rescinds Offshore Renewable Energy Leasing Schedule?  In the news release, it speaks about the U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) released on August 4, 2025, they will be withdrawing required current wind or renewables lease schedules; 30 C.F.R. § 585.150.  The current code requires renewable/wind lease sales for a five-year timeline to be held at least every 2 years.  The BOEM found the stipulation in not supported by the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, the Secretary of Interior will be able to schedule renewable lease sales as needed by changes in innovation and interest.  The Federal Register published the change on August 5, 2025, if you would like to make a comment to this change, please see the link.  Well, this change may be a blessing if it makes the schedule more fluid, nonetheless it may also mean they won’t have any during the current administration’s term only time will tell.  If we hear anything else interesting from the BOEM, we will let you know.  If you would like to read more of the BOEM’s News Release, please click the link: BOEM Rescinds Offshore Renewable Energy Leasing Schedule | Bureau of Ocean EnergyManagement.
