Happy Wednesday!
We love to
write about things which connect to our previous blogs, and U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration’s (MURAD) National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) Program had its second ship return from its
maiden voyage and back to its new home last October, please check out our Blog
for details. We wrote on our own Texas A&M University (TAMU) –
Galveston Maritime Academy NSMV training ship, TS Lone Star State, and the
progress it has made on its way to the Lone Star state; please check out of
blog in December 2023, for details. Well, MURAD has another NSMV ship in
its arsenal!
Did anyone
happen to read gCaptain Daily Newsletter on August 27, 2025, their
article titled, “Maine Maritime Academy’s New Training Ship Vessel Christened
at Hanwha Philly Shipyard”? The article speaks
in regard to the U.S.’s third NSMV called NSMV III ‘State of Maine’ has had its
christening and blessing ceremony yesterday at Hanwha Philly Shipyard in
Pennsylvania. ‘State of Maine’ is destined
for the Maine Maritime Academy where
future mariners will have hands-on training as well as the opportunity to get
qualified for their unlimited tonnage license. The ‘State of Maine’ is going to have a new and
improved wharf which will give the ship more than 1,100 linear feet of space, and
the improvements should be completed next summer.
MURAD
invested $350 million for the NSMV III “State of Maine” this 525-foot multiuse
vessel is part of MURAD’s NSMV Program which America invested in to help
support its future blue economy and its future mariners. The NSMV Program is a partnership
between public and private sectors to make multi-use vessels which may be used
to educate future mariners as well as aid the public in times of need. All five NSMVs are or will be modern
innovative training vessels, which were designed with cadets in mind, so they
will have spaces for classrooms, a complete bridge and room for approximately
600 cadets for their schooling at sea. The
ship in addition will have a hospital, helicopter pad, and the ship will be
able to help 1,000 people when duty calls in times of distress. Another feature of the ship is it is capable
of rolling supplies or containers on and off quickly. The Massachusetts Maritime Academy received the second NSMV II’ Patriot State’ last fall, and
the first NSMV was the ‘Empire State VII’ which calls SUNY Maritime College at the State
University of New York home. These
vessels are the beginning of America’s desire to resume its place as a leader in
maritime power. The NSMV Program
has two more innovative ships to complete for maritime academies in Texas and
California. We wish the ‘State of Maine’
a long successful life training our future mariners and helping those in need. “Bon voyage! Here’s to smooth sailing and
adventures new!” If you would like to
