Federal money has helped fund a record-breaking hydrogen-powered heavy-duty rescue vehicle!

Happy Thursday!

We blogged back in April of 2023 in regard to the Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Initiative which are a group of Hydrogen Corridor Projects; two of the started projects are GTO Energy’s Houston to Los Angeles corridor (H2LA) and CALSTART’s East Coast Commercial ZEV corridor well it appears there may be one more hydrogen fueled vehicle for use on them.

Did anyone happen to read the newsletter from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office on December 17, 2024, their article titled, “Hydrogen-Powered Heavy-Duty Truck Establishes New Threshold by Traveling 1,800 Miles on a Single Fill”?  In the article, it speaks about a milestone which has been attained by a U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) partially funded project where Accelera by Cummins’ model “H2Rescue” a heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell electric truck travelled 1,806 miles in normal daily traffic on one fill-up of hydrogen, in addition it released zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.  The truck is now in the Guinness World Record in a new division as of its November trip.  Accelera’s H2Rescue truck has a Cummins Accelera fuel cell engine and a 250-kilowatt traction motor, and its hydrogen tank had 175 kilograms (kg), and the trip didn’t empty the tank.  The no carbon emissions are a big accomplishment because a normal internal combustion engine releases 664 pounds of CO2 emissions in standard 1,800-mile trip this reduction means a heavy-duty rescue truck can reduce its carbon footprint 2.5 metric tons a year and reduce its fuel consumption of over 1,800 gallons.  This government-private funded project shows what happens when private and public entities work together to attain more environmentally friendly product.  We congratulate Accelera and the DOE on its accomplishment, and we hope we see more American innovations for hydrogen use soon!  If you would like to read more of the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Office’s Newsletter, please click the link: Hydrogen-Powered Heavy-Duty Truck Establishes New Threshold by Traveling 1,800 Miles on a SingleFill | Department of Energy.
