A draft of the EIS for Offshore Oil and Gas Lease Sales in the Gulf of Mexico is completed and awaiting the start of its comment period!

Happy Tuesday!

We admit Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) announcement on their oil and gas lease sales seemed to go with our Blog we posted yesterday on offshore wind energy.  We did say, if we heard anything else on the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) we would let you know.   This goes with our previous blogs on the BOEM including one we did in early May of this year on there may be a problem with the 2025 Offshore Oil and Gas Lease Sale, if the EIS takes 18 months.  Well, it looks like they were off base with the timeline and here’s the latest.

Did anyone happen to read gCaptain Daily Newsletter on December 10, 2024, their article titled, “BOEM’s Draft EIS Sets the Stage for the GoM Oil Leasing in a Shifting Energy Landscape”?  The article speaks in regard to the U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) has published its Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the GoM oil and gas lease sales.   Back at the end of 2023 the BOEM released its 2024-2029 National Outer Continental Shelf (OSC) Oil and Gas Leasing Program and posted it on the Federal Register.  The OSC Program reported the fewest number of oil and gas lease sales during a five-year period and only three areas of the GoM will be available.  The Draft of the Programmatic EIS for the GoM will influence future offshore lease sales and offer minimum domain of around 60 million acres which was a requirement to have future offshore wind energy lease sales. The Draft of the EIS will be posted and up for its comment period of 45 days soon and according to the BOEM’s announcement there will be 3 virtual meetings in January.  Well, it will be interesting to see if and how this will change with the incoming President.  If we hear anything else interesting from the BOEM on the GOM, we will let you know.  If you would like to read more of gCaptain’s article, please click the link: BOEM's Draft EIS Sets the Stage for GoM Oil Leasing in a Shifting Energy Landscape.
