The future of hydrogen for modern airports is going to begin with a study in Houston and 4 other cities in North America.

Happy Thursday!

Well, looks like Houston is going to be getting another kind of hydrogen hub besides the HyVelocity Hub which will be producing clean hydrogen.

Did anyone see The Houston Chronicle’s The 713 Afternoon’s Newsletter on May 22, 2024, their article titled, “Hydrogen-powered jets from Houston in 2035? IAH is about to become an experimental ‘hydrogen hub”?  This article is in regard to a collaboration agreement between Airbus, Houston’s Airports, and the Center for Houston’s Future are all teaming up to further study hydrogen and its uses for George Bush International Airport.  The goal of the study is to see what the opportunities and pitfalls for the hydrogen supply are, what changes does the airport need to get ready for using this sustainable fuel, and how much hydrogen might possibly be used around the airport grounds as well as in the sky to lower its carbon footprint.  The hydrogen hub study is expected to last until March 2025.  The groups involved will share their data and research from prior low carbon and sustainability studies.  The study is a continuation of other sustainability studies Houston has been involved with in trying to help the transition to alternative energy sources to keep us a leader in energy.

Airbus has an aircraft in development which will use hydrogen as its fuel source, and they have developed a timeline which ends with commercial passengers on flights in 2035.  Airbus has announced Houston is only one of five places they will be investigating for a hydrogen hub, the other cities are Atlanta, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.  We expect we may have a future customer for the HyVelocity Hub, if Airbus succeeds to design a hydrogen powered aircraft.  If you would like to read more of the article from The Houston Chronicle for free on Start MSN, please click the link: Hydrogen-powered jets from Houston in 2035?
