Happy Tuesday!
Did anyone
happen to see the Houston CCS Alliance’s Newsletter on December 15, 2023,
their article titled, “DOE Awards Calpine up to $270 Million for Baytown CCS
Project”? The article was about the
Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) picked
Calpine’s Baytown CCS Project as one of the recipients of federal money for
carbon capture and storage demonstrations and may get up to $270 million. The three projects which are located in
Texas, North Dakota, and California will share $890 million from the Bipartisan
Infrastructure Law. The three will be showing how the power plant
industry can be a good neighbor and help bring good paying jobs to an area!
The Baytown Carbon
Capture and Storage Project has two goals.
One is it will catch 95% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its
Baytown Energy Facility. Calpine will use
Shell’s CANSOLV solvent to capture the CO2 which then will be sent by pipeline to a saline
storage site on the Gulf Coast. The
second is Baytown CCS Project will be trying to reduce its use of freshwater by
using its wastewater in something called greywater cooling. The Baytown CCS
Project is trying to address two problems with the power plant industry by catching
its CO2 emissions and reusing greywater in hopes to make the area around it a better
place to live! If you would like to read
