Oil spill in Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana coast has everything in area at a standstill, and is in Top 10 of oil spills in American waters!

Happy Tuesday!

Welcome back to another week of ESC Blog!  I know you’re probably wondering where we were last week, but we stepped out of the office to get some R&R and time with our families.  We hope you did the same and enjoyed time with your family! Now we are refreshed and ready to wind down the year!

Did anyone happen to read The Houston Chronicle’s Business Section on November 25, 2023, their article titled, “Gulf oil spill among nation’s largest – Coast Guard says Third Coast pipeline is suspected cause”?  The article was about an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana which was detected around November 16, 2023.  The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is unsure who’s the culprit in the spill, and it looks like it ranks in the top 10 of largest oil spills to be in American waters in the last forty-years.  As we mentioned in our blog after the Maritime Women event a couple weeks ago, the U.S. Coast Guard is in charge of the federal on-scene coordination in waterway environmental disasters.  They are still investigating who’s responsible for over one-million gallons of oil in the Gulf.  A Houston company, Third Coast Infrastructure, has shut down their pipeline which is in the area of the oil slick, but others for example Oxy and Talos have assets in the area have shut down too while it is under investigation.  The USCG was lucky the Gulf is very rough seas, and the spill has broken up, but there is clean up still to do before it effects the wildlife and oil production in the area any further.  Hopefully, the USCG will determine whose leak it is, and cleanup will commence.  If you would like to read more of The Houston Chronicle’s article, please click the link: Houston firms affected by oil spill that could be largest since BP(houstonchronicle.com)

As of today, the Gulf’s oil spill’s origination is still under investigation!  Let’s cross our fingers the USCG’s investigators find the source soon!  If you would like to keep tabs of their progress, please click the link: UPDATE 3: Unified Command monitors, responds to Gulf oil incident > United States Coast Guard News > Press Releases (uscg.mil).

If you would like help in looking into how to update your terminal and pipelines, so you don’t have a problem like this, contact us via email in the blog and check out our ESC's website for contact information!

We hope you have a wonderful evening and a great rest of your week!
