Happy Tuesday!
Did anyone
happen to read The Houston Chronicle on October 13, 2023, their article titled,
“Area set to receive hydrogen hub label – Texas Gulf Coast would get billions
to develop technology”? In the article, it
goes on to speak about how the Texas Gulf Coast has been granted the opportunity
as one of the seven of the U.S. Department of Energy Clean Energy Demonstration Office’s (OCED) H2Hubs Program. The Houston centered area hub will
possibly be receiving about $1.2 billion in federal money and will be the biggest
of the hubs. The other hubs which are up
for the awarded federal money from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and
Jobs Act (IIJA) are Philadelphia, PA; California, the Appalachian region, the
Midwest, the Northern Plains, and the Pacific Northwest. The H2Hubs
Program was developed as a way to help the U.S. decarbonize heavy industry, as
well as trucking and shipping and reduce greenhouse gases (GHG). The Houston area is a leader in blue hydrogen
which is made from natural gas, but with the federal funds the money will help capture
and store its emissions in old oil fields under the Gulf of Mexico. The hope is the federal funding will help
with the transition to green hydrogen the Houston Hub is planning on
developing. The new hydrogen industry is
expecting to bring 10,000 jobs, and 35,000 construction jobs to the Houston
Gulf Coast area. The federal money
invested in hydrogen is hoping it will help the U.S. keep our energy independence
as well as aiding in reducing climate change.
