Happy Monday and welcome back to
another week of Energy Specialists Consulting LLC News’ Blog!
We wrote about the U.N.
International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment
Protection Committee (MEPC 80) meeting last week where 1,800 delegates attended
either in-person or remotely, and we thought we should follow-up on some of what
the organization agreed upon for the international shipping industry and their
help in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The IMO committee released a press
briefing, “Revised GHG reduction strategy for global shipping adopted” on
July 7, 2023. The IMO committee revised
their goals to reaching net-zero GHG emissions for around 2050, they pledged to
the understanding the need to use alternative zero and near-zero GHG fuels by
2030, and lastly, they agreed upon strategy to ensure they were on-track for
2030 and 2040. Some of the strategies
for reaching their goals included designing and building more energy efficient ships,
to implement the use of zero or near-zero GHG emission technologies, fuels or
other energy sources on ships as well as following their agreed upon checkpoints
and target dates. The checkpoints are
reducing GHG emissions in the shipping industry by at least twenty percent by
2030, when compared to 2008. By 2040 the checkpoint strategy is to reduce GHG
emissions by at least seventy percent, when compared to 2008. The IMO made some other agreements as well as
a timeline of meetings starting with MEPC 81 in the Spring of 2024 with the consensus
of target dates of implementation of their agreed upon measures and strategies. If you would like to read in more detail the press
briefing, “Revised GHG reduction strategy for global shipping adopted” from
