Learnings from the GHPB’s Commerce Club Luncheon from Thursday, June 13, 2024.

We went to the Greater Houston Port Bureau (GHPB) Commerce Club Luncheon at the Houston Marriot South at Hobby Airport today. 

The speaker was Nataly Marks, she is the President of Triple-S Steel Holdings, Inc.    Ms. Marks was born in Russia and moved to the US to Houston, Texas with her family, when she was 11 years old due to her dad worked in the oil and gas industry.  She pursued a higher education at the University of Texas in Austin.  When she graduated, she started her career in banking and with the help of a mentor she moved up in the banking world   Ms. Marks uses her previous experience from the banking industry is help Triple-S Steel Holdings, Inc.  She was named the President of Triple-S Steel Holdings in February 2024, after working at the family-owned business since 2022, but their work history started when she was a banker at Chase.  

The Triple-S Steel Holdings is a family-owned business which was started in 1960 by Bruce Stein with the help of his wife, Shirley.  Triple-S Holdings began as a small steel distribution yard called Triple-S Steel Supply, and it has grown into the company you see today.  The company has 50 locations located across 4 countries which include the U.S. as well as Colombia, and they have about 2300 employees.  They are one of the biggest steel distributors in the U.S. with over fifty years of experience.  Triple-S Steel Holdings has a diverse product line from the do-it-yourselfer who is repairing his fence to the stadium being built down the street.  Steel is helping build this great country and its infrastructure!

Ms. Marks spoke on the history of Triple-S Steel Holdings, as well as about the economy and challenges of finding and keeping good talent.  The economy has slowed but there is growth in many sectors.  The construction industry is currently down, but data centers and data transmission are still growing.   She spoke on the challenges shared across the room on how do you get and keep good talent.  Ms. Marks suggestions included making sure the person has a good mentor as well as a quality training program.   She believes mentoring is important to grow a good asset for your company, and they help give the person perspective as well as teaches them the business.  Another way to keep talent is pay per performance-based pay, so reward the stronger workers as well as keeping their skills current in technology including Artificial Intelligence.  Lastly, Ms. Marks spoke about building a talent pool by pairing with high schools and universities with internships.  Ms. Marks gave an interesting talk about the economy and keeping and finding good talent.
