Sea Change, the first U.S. hydrogen fueled ferry obtains COI from USCG.

Happy Tuesday!  Welcome back to another week of ESC News Blog.  We hope you had an enjoyable long weekend!

Did anyone happen to read the gCaptain Daily Newsletter on May 23, 2024, their article titled, “USCG Approves First Hydrogen-Powered Ferry to Operate in U.S. Waters”?  The article speaks on the topic of a zero-emission hydrogen-fueled ferry called Sea Change which was designed and built by SWITCH Maritime was approved by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) San Fransisco Sector to get their Certificate of Inspection (COI).  Sea Change is now ready to begin its service for the San Francisco Bay Area Emergency Transportation Authority as a public ferry for a six-month demonstration period which will begin June 2024.  If the demonstration is successful, SWITCH Maritime will expand on their offerings to bring this zero-emission ferry to more markets and expand on their offerings for size.

Sea Change is the first hydrogen-fueled vessel in the U.S., and it has similar capabilities as diesel ferries.  This ferry uses electric motors which won’t need the standard shoreside charging stations.  It will be able to travel about 300 nautical miles, and able to attain speeds up to 15 knots without the emissions of diesel vessels.  Sea Change was American built and launched in shipyard in Washington.  SWITCH Maritime’s Sea Change is making headway to show hydrogen powered vessels work for the maritime industry on its journey to become a net-zero industry.   If you would like to read more about the SWITCH Maritime’s hydrogen-fueled powered ferry, Sea Change, from gCaptain, please click the link: USCG Approves First Hydrogen-Powered Ferry to Operate in U.S. Waters (gcaptain.com).
