Minesto’s Dragon 12 has started up and it is producing utility-scale electricity for Faroe Islands.

Happy Monday! Happy President’s Day!  Welcome back to another week of ESC News Blog!

Did anyone happen to read the Oil & Gas Journal’s Energy Transition Update Newsletter on February 15, 2024, they republished an article from Offshore titled, “Minesto tidal energy kite delivers first electricity to Faroe Islands grid”?   In the article, it spoke in regard to Minesto’s tidal energy powerplant Dragon 12 which has been commissioned and is producing electricity (1.2 MW) for the Faroe Islands power grid as of February 9th, 2024.  Faroe Islands are part of Denmark’s territory, they self-govern, and have 2 seats to represent them in the Danish government.  Faroe Islands goal is to use only renewable energy by 2030, and Minesto’s subsea kite will help them achieve their goal.  Dragon 12 is 12-m-wide (39.37 feet), and a 28-ton heavy subsea kite and it is attached the seabed with a line, and it is maneuvered in an 8-shaped flight trajectory powered by the direction of the tide.  This utility-scale subsea kite is based on Minesto’s Dragon 4 which has proven to be cost effective and has a good steady performance as a producer of energy.   Now Minesto’s proven their subsea kite can be utility-scale it opens up a whole new world of possibilities!  If you would like to read more of the Oil & Gas Journal’s republished article, please click the link:   Minesto tidal energy kite delivers first electricity to Faroe Islands grid | Offshore(offshore-mag.com).
