Happy Thursday! We are almost done for the week!
If you read our Blog back on
March 9, 2023, Col. Michael E. Fossum, Vice President of Texas A&M University
(TAMU) - Galveston was the speaker for the Commerce Club Luncheon. Col. Fossum spoke about them getting their
own training ship which is expected to be completed in 2025. Yesterday the training ship started to become
reality!
Did anyone
happen to read the Greater Houston Port Bureau’s (GHPB) Newsletter on December
7, 2023, they announced, “Texas A&M University Galveston and Texas A&M
Maritime Academy, celebrate the keel laying of the TS Lone Star State training
ship.” This set us out looking for
information on this landmark occasion. We
found an article in the Texas A&M’s The Maritime Executive; their article,”
Texas A&M Celebrates Keel Laying for New Training Ship.” The article goes on to document the important
event of the training ship’s keel laying or beginning of construction for the
new ship. This is a momentous occasion for
the TAMU’s Maritime Academy, the ship will be a state-of-the-art training facility
which will be used by their program to educate future men and women maritime workers. The ship will be 524-foot training ship which
will have spaces for classrooms, a complete bridge and room for 600 cadets for
their training at sea. The ship in addition will have a hospital,
helicopter pad, and the ship will be able to help 1,000 victims when duty calls.
The TS Lone Star State will be able to
bring humanitarian aid during disasters with room to hold storage containers
which will be able to move on and off the ship.
The training ship will part of
the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration’s (MURAD) NSMV
Program which received funding in 2020 for an emergency relief vessel which would
be a multi-use vessel, and it will be able to help train our future Maritimers.
