Happy Tuesday!
Did anyone read The Houston
Chronicle Business Section on Thursday, May 18, 2023, the reprinted article
from the Associated Press titled, “33.4M for BP Gulf Coast carbon capture”? In the article, it speaks about The Biden administration’s
announcement last week for investment of $251 million in carbon capture and
storage (CCS) projects in seven states aiming to cutback greenhouse gases from
power plants and other industrial sites.
This shows the administration believes in recent technology gains in CCS
as do allies of the oil and gas industries, but environmentalists have their
doubts of its usefulness in the current crisis. The current administration is turning the
heat up on the CCS industry to show this is a viable option to reduce emissions
in large scale, but at this time it is untested. One of the companies granted
money was BP. BP was granted
33.4 million dollars toward their CCS projects and with the money it is
building two sites along the Gulf Coast in Texas. About nine million dollars of the money is
going to three studies into how to move carbon dioxide from power plants,
ethanol and industrial facilities for indefinite storage into possibly underground
geologic formations or to find other uses for it. The announcement is in line with the new proposed
EPA Rules for power plants which use fossil fuels. Is CCS the answer we are all hoping for or is
it a distraction from finding the real answer to help with greenhouse gases and
climate change like the environmentalists believe. Hopefully, it is the step in the right
direction! If you would like to read more of the article from The Houston Chronicle
